You can use scraps.

b. Medium dark: cut two (2 ½” x 11”) strips
c. Lightest dark: cut one (2 ½” x 11”) strip

e. Medium light: cut two (2 ½” x 11”) strips
f. Lightest: cut one (2 ½” x 11”) strip
Unit 1.
Sew one strip of light fabric (d) lengthwise to one strip of (e) and (f). See diagram. Press seam allowance to the widest (d) strip. Diagram A
Unit 2.
Sew one strip of (d) to the other strip of (e). Press the seam allowance to the smaller strip.
Unit 3.
Cut both into 2 ½” segments. You should have four.
Use one of each unit and sew together as in diagram B. Sew to a 3” square. You should have half a block.
Take your ruler and put it against the two tips. See diagram. You should have ¼” seam allowance from the seams. Cut on the diagonal.
Repeat with the light fabric.
