9-Patch Variation from a 4-Patch - November 2010 technique

This 9-Patch starts with a 4-patch block. The one below was made with 5 inch squares and it will finish to a 9.5 inch block, using the scant ¼” method.

Make your 4-Patch block. Press well.

Next, make 4 cuts without moving the block or the cut pieces. Use a small mat that will allow you to turn the block. Centre the middle seams on your cutting mat and measure one inch from each centre seam and cut; repeat on all four seams, rotating your mat and cutting one inch away from the centre seam.  See diagram below. You will now see a 9-Patch appearing.

Next, rotate only the center outside sections 180 degrees and then sew three rows as shown in the photo below.

Sew the sections together as shown in the photo to complete the block.

Viola! You now have a 9-patch block. You can vary the look by the width of the cut. This block makes a fast and easy quilt because it is fast to sew and looks complicated.

This block can be done starting with a 9-patch but using a 4-patch allows you to get the look desired by varying the width of the measurement from the centre seam.
